VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Metals News - Jan. 25, 2009) - The Canada Tibet Committee held an information protest at the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference from 8:00AM to 12:00PM, Sunday, January 25, 2009, to stop Canadian involvement in the mining of Tibet. “Under the conditions of the Chinese occupation the Tibetans cannot be part of the process, because they legally have no voice,” stated Mati Bernabie, Vice President of the Vancouver Chapter of the Canada Tibet Committee, “If the Tibetans speak out… they literally risk arrest, torture and death.”
The protestors feel that under the current political conditions no mine should exist in Tibet and Canadian companies should not be involved in mining until China gives the people of Tibet a “true voice.” They state that the main issue it that of self determination for the people of Tibet so the people can act for themselves.
When asked the odds of this happening, Mati responded, “What were the odds that the Berlin wall was going to come down? What were the odds that the Soviet Union was going to break up? What were the odds that Barack Obama would be elected president?... This just has to happen.”
